We've seen it over and over, and not just with women riders. There a rider
is on main street, the bike ahead of him stops and he
grabs the front brake. The wheel isn't exactly straight,
and he muscles the $20,000.00 beast all the way to the
pavement. Ouch! How embarrassing. Nice tippy
toe there pal. The best way is not to have the
motorcycle falling over in the first place. KEEP YOUR
FRONT WHEEL STRAIGHT WHEN STOPPING!
TIP: Lets say, the front wheel is slightly
turned to the left at that quick stop and you're at a
dead stop but the motorcycle slowly starts going down to
the left - You can muscle it, or quickly turn the
bars in the opposite direction of the fall. Bike
falling to the left - turn the bars to the right quickly
... that's all there is to it. guess what, the bike
stands right up and you only look dorky for using the
front brake too much, not for damaging a $75.00 custom
mirror, and having to pick it up off main street in
front of several hundred people.
We're going to put up a demonstration video asap,
but you can test it safely by putting your side stand
down and tilting the bike toward it, (left), quickly
turn the bars to the right and watch what happens.
Where did we learn this trick? A motor cop who worked
Bikeweek in Daytona. Did he ever drop a bike on Main
Street, "no, but I sure did learn how to turn that bar
fast, sometimes the sand will play with ya".
The geometry of the steering system of most
motorcycles is designed so that the front wheel has a strong tendency to steer in the direction of a lean..........
- ok, I won't try to explain why it works ... it just
does.
Hey this is NOT a MSF approved tip - come to class.. |
